Billie turned one of the burners of the stove on high, filled a large pot with water and set it down on the warming burner, when there was a rather timid knock on the door of the apartment. Billie wiped his hands on a towel and made his way through the kitchen, turning to his right to the apartment door. Out of total paranoia since his wife was killed, Billie stood up on his toes to see through the peep hole. He couldn't see anybody, but it was probably Mike. He always wondered around when he knocked on Billie's door.

"Mike?" Billie asked as he opened the door. Mike popped up from around the corner and grinned.

"I have a really random question," Mike said, grinning so hard it was obvious that it was fake.

"Okay, do you want to come in?" Billie asked. Mike nodded, so Billie moved to the side, opening the door wider, inviting him in. Mike promptly made his way to the living room and Billie followed suit.

"Billie," Mike said and turned around sharply. His grin faded into a rather upset expression. "Marianne kicked me out!"

"Could anything else go wrong for you today?" Billie asked sarcastically. Mike's eyes dropped and his lips pursed.

"Don't say that. Now something else bad will happen," Mike replied darkly. "I just wanted to know if I could stay here until I got a place of my own."

"You are more than welcome here, Mike," Billie said, still laughing at his own joke. Mike relaxed and sighed heavily.

"I really didn't want to have to live on your couch again, Billie Joe," Mike said quietly.

"I know you don't," Billie replied. "My kids are gonna love this, though. They'll be all like, 'sleep over with Uncle Mike!'"

"Okay, guys, off to bed, alright?" Billie herded his kids into their room and then pulled some blankets from the linen closet and brought them to the living room. Mike was sitting on the couch, head in his hands. Billie plopped the blankets on the cushion next to Mike and stood in front of him.

"Mikey..." Billie sang quietly. Mike looked up, the sound of Billie's soft voice making his heart skip a beat. "You're going to have to get up if you want me to put the blankets down."

"I can do it, Billie Joe. You can go ahead and sleep," Mike said. Billie's eyes narrowed, knowing there was more to this whole visit than what Mike was telling him, but he decided not to press it.

"Okay, good night then," Billie sighed and left for his room.

Mike could hear the soft voices as Billie tucked his boys into bed, and then their door shut, followed by Billie's door.

"Mike?" whispered a small voice. Mike, who wasn't asleep yet, rolled over to face Billie's oldest son, Joseph.

"Yeah, Joey?" Mike whispered back.

"Just to let you know, Daddy's been having really bad nightmares," Joey explained, "and he may get up in the middle of the night. He'll get mad if you go talk to him. I know you'd go try and help him."

Mike frowned, and said, "Okay, thanks for the warning. I don't want to wear out my welcome this soon." Joey smiled, satisfied with the response, and went back to bed.

Mike jolted awake to someone screaming, and soon realized it was Billie. He flung himself from the couch and was around the corner just in time to see Billie run from his bedroom to the bathroom, where he turned on the light and slammed the door behind him. Mike could hear him vomiting, sobbing between heaves. Mike's heart was up in his throat, almost choking him. Mike slowly moved towards the door and heard the toilet flush, and then water running from the sink. Billie was spitting into the sink, probably brushing his teeth. The water turned off, and then on again, and then off. He heard Billie crying softly, muffled.
